Solar Vehicle

The document outlines various aspects related to the design and construction of solar and electric vehicles, with a specific focus on bicycles. It discusses the importance of motor specifications, including power ratings, voltage, and RPM, and offers equations for converting and calculating torque.

ex: Piaggio MP3

The MP3 three-wheeler opts for two wheels at the front and one wheel at the rear. The front axle is articulated and has a tilt angle of up to 40° (limited to around 35° for a two-wheeled scooter). The two front wheels are suspended independently of one another.

This three-wheeler is not self-supporting, i.e. you have to put your leg out when at a standstill to keep the MP3 balanced.

only 420 mm wide

distribution of mass at the front (51% front / 49% rear, as opposed to 40/60% on a classic scooter)

In a straight line, at low or high speeds, this three-wheeler displays impeccable stability. But it is above all in corners and when braking that its performance is staggering.

front axle level has two shock absorbers

innovative parrallelogram suspension

Like all Piaggio scooters, the frame of the MP3 is of tubular steel. Totally new for its part, the parallelogram front suspension uses a tilt mechanism consisting of four aluminium arms. This highly sophisticated system makes it possible to stagger the two wheels when cornering in order to make the most of their different rotation speeds, and allows a height difference of over 20 cm between them. The classic rear axle adopts the solution of the swinging engine, suspended by two adjustable shock absorbers. The wheels of the MP3 are 12 inches in diameter, 120 mm wide at the front and 130 at the rear. Michelin was among the manufacturers used to design the specific tyres of the MP3 (Pilot Sport SC).

can we buy a wreched/broken one somewhere?!

403 SunPower A300 cells make 6 square meters

Teams seem to be using two different Sunpower data sheets 70-0006 Rev 02 and 70-0006 Rev 03. Both have the same dimensions for the overall cell but differ slightly in tab placement.

Sunpower state the dimensions for a cell are 150 diameter with 125 x 125 square edges. All dimensions are in millimeters. Note that they have written 125 mm and not 124 or 126 mm therefore we can assume an uncertainty of +/- 0.5 mm. To calculate the uncertainty of the area we multiply the linear uncertainties, which gives us +/- 0.25 mm2.

The area of the A-300 cell as calculated using AutoDesk 3-D modeller, gives us 14,857.99 +/- 0.25 mm2. If we take the low tolerance we get 14,857.99 less 0.25, which gives an area of 14,857.74 mm2.

Regulation C.4 demands the total surface area of the solar array be no greater than 6.000m2. Therefore to meet the regulation the maximum number of A300 Cells is 403 (5.987m2).
