IS THERE A WAY TO STOP CHILD LABOUR?

There are many people and organisations around the world who try to stop child labour. They speak about children’s conditions and try to convince nations to fight child labour with the law. There is also a World Day Against Child Labour (12 June), so that everyone can talk about this problem.

WHAT KIND OF JOBS ARE DANGEROUS?

CHILDREN CANNOT SUPPORT TOO MUCH WEIGHT

Mining is very dangerous. Many children who work in mines get sick or die. Children who work with bricks to build buildings are in danger. Children who are forced to become soldiers or slaves suffer a lot.

So what kind of work do child workers do?

Many different types. Some work on farms and fields. Some work in factories, others have to go down to the mines. Some work as servants or waitresses, others sell things on the street or in markets. And some are even forced to join armies and fight as soldiers or work for very bad people like drug gangs.

ISN’T IT ILLEGAL TO MAKE CHILDREN WORK?

Yes, in many countries. But in some countries it doesn't it is illegal and some families hide the the fact that their son works. They do so because they have no money for it eat, or because they live where there is war or natural disaster.

WHAT KIND OF WORK DO THEY DO?

They work in farms, in fields, in factories, in mines. Sometimes they work in the street and they sell clothes, sometimes they are servant for rich people. Many children don’t get paid for their work, or they get paid too little and they don’t have money for food and a place to sleep.

WHAT IS CHILD LABOUR

Child labor is when children are doing work they shouldn't be doing that harms them or prevents them from going to school.

An estimated 168 million children between the ages of five and 17 are underage workers. That's a huge number - that's as many as there are people living in the UK, Argentina, Canada and Malaysia combined. Many of these 168 million children never go to school or drop out of school.
