Otra posibilidad considerada por Darwin era la dispersión de semillas en el barro de las patas de las aves.
Darwin quería mostrar que las especies pueden dispersarse a distancias mayores de lo que la gente creía. Por eso, probar que las semillas podían sobrevivir durante largos períodos en agua de mar y luego germinar era importante, ya que implicaba que era posible la dispersión a grandes distancias a través de las corrientes oceánicas.
