The respiratory system facilitates the intake and exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide between the body and the environment. Air is inhaled through the mouth or nasal cavity, filtered by ciliated epithelial cells in the pharynx, and travels down the trachea to the bronchi, which deliver it to the lungs.
