Ontological argument

The ontological argument begins with the definition of God as a being than which nothing greater can be conceived. This argument asserts that even atheists must acknowledge this concept.

A piori argument

Based on language- knowledge based on reasoning and not the senses or experience
the argument is based on reasoning

Gaunilo's criticisim:

Subtopic
Fatcs are needed- if the argument can prove the existence of a pretend island, it is flawed
Just becauce you can consieve something- does not mean it exists
Would be better if it was real- then it must exist
The perfect lost island, better than any other, he could think of it
Thus, it is impossible for a human to consieve a perfect being
Our experiences through senses show the world is not perfect. They have the potential to improve.
"written on behalf of the fool"- reference to pslams
He never doubted the existence of god, he was also religious. He thought the argument was flawed.

Begins with the definition of god

If god only existed in thought- we would be able to think of something reater than god- this would be contradictory
If there no being greater than god- god must exist in reality as well as in thought
Something that exists in reality greater than in the mind alone
You can think of winning the lotto- is it not better for it to happen than simply in the mind alone?
It is a greater thing to exist than to not exist
"God is a being than which nothing can be conseived"
Even an atheist must aknowledge this

Anselm

Never doubted the existence of god
