Empathy (By Chi Ho)

The importance of empathy is emphasized through a structured approach in educational settings, involving both students and colleagues. Setting clear ethical expectations is crucial, with a focus on discussing, modeling, and reinforcing empathy in the classroom.

3. Practice.

I would teach my students and my colleagues in the math department how to calm down and resolve disputes with their peers.
I would create an in-class activity for my students to role-play and practice empathy.

4. Set clear ethical expectations.

I would try to establish guidelines for unacceptable language and behaviours in my class with my students.
I would create a video and email it to the parents and my colleagues in the math department talking about empathy, model it, praise it, and hold them to it.
I would spend some class time going over the poster on empathy with students (i.e., talk about it, model it, praise it, and hold students to it).

5. Make school culture and climate a priority.

I would create a Google Form survey to ask my students, parents, colleagues, and other staff in school whether they feel safe, respected, and cared about at school.
I will then take time to examine the data and try to address some problems pointed out by my students, parents, colleagues, and other staff in school.

2. Teach what empathy is and why it matters.

I would have a Math department meeting with my colleagues and talk about what empathy is and why it matters so that they are on board.
I would create a poster that talks about empathy and why it matters, and then email the poster to the parents and students to make sure that they are on board. I would also post this poster on the bulletin board in the math office for my colleagues so that they are also on board.
I would spend some class time with my students to teach them what empathy is and why it matters.

1. Model empathy.

When my principal asks me to influence other math teachers to change their old teaching method to the new "Building Thinking Classroom" teaching method, I would try to understand why he suggests this and find out what the benefits are. Then, I would try to influence my math colleagues using this new teaching method by signing them up for PD workshops and buying all the necessary teaching materials to support them.
When my colleagues have conflicts with each other, I would try to understand what the conflicts are by listening to them carefully and then co-create a solution to resolve their conflicts.
I would try to co-create classroom expectations with my students, and I would listen very carefully to their concerns and show understanding of what they say.
When the students come late to class repeatedly, I will talk to them and try to understand why they repeatedly come late. Then, based on the discussions, I would talk to their parents and see what kind of support they would need.
When the students struggle with homework, I will try to listen to them to find out what the issues are and then provide support to them based on their needs. I will then reflect on my teaching method to see if there can be improvements that I can do so that my students will perform better in the future.
