Separation of Powers
Lecture Lesson
Students will follow along with a lecture about the three branches of government. During the lecture they will follow along by taking guided lecture notes. At the end of the lesson (the start of the following class) the students will score at least a 7/10 on a multiple-choice quiz about separation of powers.
Assessment: Students will take a multiple choice quiz about
separation of powers. They must score 7/10 to pass.
Teacher will give a lecture using a power point
presentation about the three branches of
government.
Students will follow along with the lecture
by taking guided notes that touch on key vocabulary
and main topics of the lecture.
The Federalist Papers
Primary Source Lesson
In small groups, students will analyze Federalist Paper Number 10, Federalist Paper Number 51, and Federalist Paper Number 78, and answer questions about the documents by analyzing their sources and content.
Assessment: Students will complete a handout answering questions about how to identify the credibility and bias within primary sources, as well as the individual importance of each of the chosen Federalist Papers.
Teacher will explain the importance of primary
sources and will monitor student understanding
by assisting students with their assignment and
asking clarifying questions.
Students will analyze the importance and relevance of primary sources by reading and analyzing key Federalist Papers' essays and answering questions about these documents.
The Constitutional Convention
Reading Lesson
Students will read and discuss short pieces about some of the key Founding Fathers and will analyze their political viewpoints by using a graphic organizer to compare their viewpoints.
Assessment: Students will have to identify at least 10
similarities and differences between the viewpoints of the
Founding Fathers.
Teacher will monitor student understanding by
going around the room and asking guiding
questions to check levels of comprehension.
Students will read biographies about the key Founding
Fathers and will create a Venn Diagram comparing and
contrasting their ideas.
