Summary

Overall, as educators we must be able to recognize these misconceptions and myths that they place upon adolescents. The negativity only clouds our judgement and ability to reach the students. We as educators are not only teachers of academics but also teachers for their life. After understanding every aspect of an adolescent, we are able to unveil who they are as students and individuals. This helps us better plan and tier our lessons to directly relate to our specific demographic of students. We have to realize that we are one of the most important influences in a child's life. This is because we see them 5 days a week for at least 8 hours a day. Because of that we must do all we can to understand them so that we can teach them how to be law abiding individuals for when they are adults.

Moral

A child's moral development can be extremely selective, this is because the child usually takes their moral views from their parents. It is evident that all families instill different morals into their children. This means that each child you teach may feel that certain moral views are more important than others. This shows that a child has not developed enough to analyze life for themselves to have their own individual morals quite yet. By knowing this we have to be more flexible as role models and teachers to allow students to begin to understand the difference between being morally correct and accepting that others morals do not have to be the same as theirs. Agreeing to disagree is something we must help our children understand. However this does not mean we bash or ostracize someone for having different views, but we respect them and allow them to express that.

Why is it beneficial for educators to know?

A common misconception in regards of an adolescents moral development is that middle grades students(adolescents) are not able to make wise decisions and that they immature in regards of morals.

Physical

Educators should always be knowledgeable when it comes to their students. This helps them understand their students better and allows them to better themselves in regards of educating the adolescent. As an educator from experience, you never know what the child may be going through. They go through so many changes that you may not be able to pin point what it is exactly, and what we need to do is have compassion and sympathy. We like to always contribute bad behavior to everything except for their development. The students may not have as much control as we may think. So by understanding these facts about development helps us better handle unexpected situations that students may have on a daily basis. We must stop blaming misbehavior on the child and start recognizing that their development, environment, and their well being has a huge contribution to how they act, react, and carry themselves in school.

Why it is beneficial for educators to know?

A common misconception is that all adolescents go through their physical changes around the same age. This is however not true. Boys and girls actually experience their growth development at different ages (girls usually 2 years earlier). The time of the development is also selective based on the adolescent.
