Life

First Gustav tried to play piano, but Gustav had another injury. Neuritis in one of his hands (inflammation of a nerve accompanied by pain and sometimes loss of function). Then, Gustav wanted to play trombone. He played for few years but later gave up the Hobby. Then, he got his living as a teacher of Music. He taught for many years but he still wasn't satisfied. Finally, he became a composer which he composed til his death. Gustav Holst had been privatley composing his own lttle song since he was twelve.
Gustav Holst studied in the Royal College of Music where he wrote many works and met Ralph von Williams and became best friends for life.
Gustav became famous for his suite "The Planets" and other symphonies he composed and conducted during and after the war.
Gustav Holst asked Adrian Boult to conduct "The Planets" in 1918.
Gustav tried to enlist for world war l but was rejected because of his illnesses (weak lungs, poor eyesight, ext.). so he becames a composer because of his love for music.
Gustav lived in a house in Barnes from when he was 34 to 39. A blue plaque infront of the building signifies that this was his house and is of historic value.
Gustav Holst's birthplace is now a muesum in Cheltenham, Eng. called "Holst Birthplace Mueseum".

Notable Works

Gustav's Suite the Planets is being performed on May 9th and 10th conducted by Peter Oundjian by Toronto Symphony Orchestra at Roy Thompson Hall, Toronto even though it was written almost 100 years ago.
Gustav Holst wrote almost 200 works, including operas, ballets, choral hymns and songs.
Gustav Holst also did other less famous pieces than the Planets, such as St.Paul's Suite for strings (1913), the Hymn of Jesus (1917), and the Choral Fantasia (1930).
Gustav Holst is most Famous for his Collection of symphonies called "The Planets" (1916). Mars, the Bringer of War. Venus, the Bringer of Peace. Mercury, the Winged Messanger. Jupiter, the Bringer of Jollity. Staurn, the Bringer of Old Age. Uranus, the Magician. Neptune, the Mystic. About 250 people gathered at Queen's Hall where "The Planets" were premiered in 1918.
