Structural Strength and Stability - Mind Map

Structural Strength and Stability

load

Static load

Dead Load

Structure that does not move and is fassined to something

Live Load

something that is moving on the dead load

Dynamic load

something that is moved against gravity and/or is not being moved by gravity but being moved by that object.

stability

stable

being stable is the opposite of being unstable. It means that you/ what is balancing as an good center of gravity so it is not moving or falling over. It means that your bases of support are surrounding your center of gravity.

unstable

Being unstable is the opposite of being stable. It means that you are you or what you are balancing does not have a good center of gravity. so it falling or moving. It means that your bases of support are not surrounding your center of gravity.

center of gravity

must be in between the base/bases of support.

bases of support

must be surrounding the center of gravity.

External Forces

Plane Of Aplication

The plane of application is the angle that the force is being applied to the object.

point of application

The point of application is the point where the force is being applied to the object.

Direction

The direction of force is where the force will be applied. Either way, the structure will collapse no matter what direction you apply the force to.

Magnitude

The magnitude is the amount of force that is being applied. It doesn't matter if you apply a small amount of force or a great amount of force, the object that you are applying the force to will move.

internal force

Torsion

twisting one object that ends up spliting into two and creating a force.

Shear

when two parallel forces are torn apart in two seperate directions. Shear and Compression and tension are very similar because compression is is pushing things apart and shear is pulling things apart.

Compression

one object is being pushed together by another greater force. Compression is the opposite of tension. Compression is pushing while tension is pulling.

Tension

one object being pulled so that when the object is released, it will fly through the air. Tension is the opposite of Compression. Tension is pulling while Compression is pushing.
