Renewable Sources of Energy

Biofuels: Biofuels are derived from animal and plant matter such as water hyacinth and sugar cane.

Disadvantages: Biofuels will produce carbon dioxide when it is burnt, contributing to the heat trappeed in the earth' atmosphere. Plants that produce these biofuels take in carbon dioxide during photosynthesis.

Conversion: Energy conversion for biofuels as an energy source is the same as fossil fuels.

Geothermal Energy : Geothermal energy is derived fro hot rocks deep underground in volcanic area.

Conversion: Heat > Kinetic energy >Electrical energy

Disadvantages: Some types of geothermal power station extract poisonous substances such as hydrogen sulfide from deep underground. This causes land around these geothermal power station to be able to sink and causes damage to buildings and roads.

Solar Energy: in sunlight can be directly converted into electrical energy by solar cells

Conversion:Light energy >Electrical energy

Disadvantages: No harmful substances are produced when solar cells generate electricity

Hydroelectric Energy: Store water in a reservoir behind a dam.Flow of water tun the blades of turbine to generate electrical energy.

Conversion:Kinetic energy >Electrical energy

Disadvantages: During the construction of hydroelectric dams ,the damming can causes extensive flooding in large areas of forest, wildlife habitats and farmland. It also prevent the flow of sediments and nutrients down river.

Wind Energy: Wind energy is an energy source that converts the energy of wind into electricity by rotating one or more turbines.

Conversion:Light energy >Electrical energy

Disdvanatges:No harmful substances when solar cells generate electricity.
