On line or Face to face English language learning?

The decision between face-to-face and online English language learning involves weighing their respective advantages and disadvantages. Face-to-face learning offers real-time interaction, immediate feedback, and the ability to directly engage with learning materials.

On line or Face to face English language learning?

My opinions

Both online and face-to-face learning are proper ways of learning, but the way in which people decide to complete their studies is more dependent on their personal opinions, needs, personalities and backgrounds. When I was young I could not attend a full course University because my family and especially the impossibility to attend classes. Today, even though I am no longer young, I can do it thanking the online degree course and ICT. Some years ago it was an impossible wish , but now I can say that one of the most important dreams of my life may come true.

When I'm trying to speak in English in front of the virtual class I 'm not panicked

Lessons are particularly engaging : the interactive teaching method improves our language skills;students help and support each other ... these are the firts steps for true relations of friendship, even if virtual.

Instant tools, used in online English lessons enable me to test my understanding and get immediate feedback.

I'm not stressed by the timetables.I'm having a lot of interesting opportunities for exchanging personal opinions, or socializing and deepening friendship.

The main characteristic of the course is “active learning”. It is really engaging and carefully organized.

A lot of study materials are uploaded on the platform and you can use them freely. The opportunity to work from home allows me to save on transportation and time.

I can re-watch recorded lectures, repeat exercises, re-read peer discussion comments, and take the time they need to master concepts. That is particularly advantageous for English language learners !

I can attend the course on my own schedule and at my own pace. This flexibility facilitates balancing my school teaching and family obligations.

When I tried to speak in English in front of the class I was really panicked

Lessons were particularly engaging because students could talk to their teachers in person and get immediate responses to their questions or concerns.

Students were stressed by time constraints and had few opportunities for exchanging personal opinions, or socializing and deepening friendship. Everything was focused on the content and the activities of the lessons.

The main characteristic of the course was “active learning”. Teachers were from USA and UK and they were also specialized in Glottodidactics.

I learnt to use technologies for the first time and I attended a glottodidactics course at Warwick University (UK). I experimented new teaching methods and strategies. That was really cool!!!

I missed a lot of lessons because of my job at school and my two small children at home.

A lot of study materials were purchased additionally. Costs like parking and fuel would also need to be considered.

Ramo principale

Face to Face and Distance learning both have their own pros and cons

Differences and similaritaties
My personal experience

On line English language learning

IUL (ItalianUniversityLine,Firenze), 2015

F2F English language learning

English language Course for teachers( Siena University language center,1994)

Lot of difficulties to reach Siena after work or on weekends .(transports, family, timetables)

Lessons started at 5 o' clock in the afternoon and finished at 9 o' clock in the evening .During the weekend and summer time from 9 o'clock in the morning to 5 o'clock in the afternoon.

On line learning
A myth to debunk

English language classes online are not as good as studying English as a foreign language in the classroom. This is false. The way in which students learn is different. Online language study isn’t right for everyone just like the face to face language study.

The virtual feedback can sometimes be confusing and can become misleading. There is no real human interaction among students /students and teachers/students, even if they can be in touch in many ways.(Social networks, mobiles, video conferences)

Freedom to study at your own time takes dedication and this can be lost quickly if your dedication is not at 100%

Study materials like E-books and videos can use quite a lot of data

The virtual feedback can sometimes be confusing and can become misleading. There is no real human interaction among student/students and teachers/students, even if they can be in touch in many ways.(Social networks, mobiles, video conferences)

Lecture notes may require a lot of reading and this can be time consuming

The virtual interaction can be unsatisfactory for people who prefer the physical face to face: many students love living the experiences of the university campus and not staying at home even if in touch with virtual classmates.

You can ask as many questions as you like . Assignments are uploaded on the platform and you can download them when you can do it ,without worrying.

The neutral online space allows students to spend time to think about their responses and think about what they want say before saying it. ( writing , discussion forums).

Students are exposed to a wide range of language from other students who are commenting or responding similar topics. So they're able to learn from them by seeing the comments and improve their language.

Interactive reading and writing can produce twice the memory retention in one quarter the time invested.

The depth of student engagement with curricular content is arguably greater when a student must articulate his/her thoughts online, in writing, both to the teacher and, particularly, to other student.

You can juggle both work and studies together. You can use your holiday time and any other free or spare time you may have.

Lecture notes, lessons,E-books and videos can be accessed 24/7 anytime and anyplace.

Online language learning is flexible and suitable because students can shape their learning . They also have a lot of resources that they need to answer their own specific needs (speaking , reading ,writing , grammar, vocabulary ,pronunciation).

The wide range of materials and different opportunities to practice the language allow students to create a level individualization in their learning.

New technologies let us to setting up conversations online with native speakers .

-Lessons can be viewed as many times as a person likes, they can be paused, fast forwarded etc.

Human interaction is virtual (forum or chat service) but it is very helpful for shy people.

Face to face learning
Cons

Students have to wait long to receive feedback from class test and exams. The amount of questions that can be asked to a teacher is minimal and not everyone has this opportunity.

Lessons are at set times :if you are unable to attend , you miss out . Class times vary and may not fit into your work schedule if you are currently working or have a family

Teachers interact with a lot of students in the classroom and they have little time to involve all of them through various contents and activities.

Students have to carry around textbooks, laptops or other devices.

Textbooks can be expensive.

Pros

Feedback and Interaction

Assignments are handed in by hand so you have the security that your assignment has been received by your lecturer. You can check on the progress of the marking of your assignments at any time.

A level individualization of learning is very difficult to achieve:language learners often lack the confidence to engage and communicate effectively.

TIMING

All students involved attend at same time, date, etc.

LEARNING MATERIALS

Questions are answered in real time .You can make direct notes in your textbook .

COMMUNICATION

Immediacy of the interaction decreases distance between students and faculty. Dialogue and collaboration occur in real time and establish real connection among students and teachers. Teachers can evaluate the emotional and psychological state of the students at the moment and change direction if events or circumstances require it.
