Disabilities

Disabilities

Students with disabilities view access to post secondary education as (1) an opportunity to enhance their chances of obtaining and maintaining employment [1], (2) a means of earning a higher annual income [4], and (3) a path- way to life-long independence and a greater quality of life.

Maltreatment

Families that experience repeated maltreatment also experience greater poverty and material need than families with more successful outcomes.

In 2012, the largest percentage (78.3%) of child maltreatment cases were neglect (USDHHS, 2012), defined as “failure by the caregiver to provide needed, age appropriate care although finan cially able to do so or offered financial or other means to do so”

The lower the socioeconomic status of families is led to a higher risk of maltreatment

Examples include: not enough money for dental work or medical care

Similarities

These topics are all related to one another because they have at least one thing in common: Social Services. Social Services are around to help others who are in need and they will not stop until they find a way to help others. There are those with disabilities who they will stand up for and fight to get them into colleges and universities. And there are those who live in poverty, suffers through maltreatment and then those who have child welfare. No matter how their paths cross with Social Services, they will stand by their side until the clients no longer need them.

My agency, New Kent Social Services, also help clients who deal with poverty, maltreatment disability, and child welfare.

Child Welfare

Child Welfare

Designed to ensure children are safe and families are able to care for them.

If families are unable to take care of a child, Social Services helps them out by recommending possible programs.

Supports child abuse and neglect

Social Services is the first institution that gets involved in a child's life.

1692- states and municipalities identified care for abused and neglected children as he responsibility of local governments and private institutions

1980- Congress passed the first federal child protective services act called "Adoption Assistance and Child Welfare Act of 1980"

Poverty

Poverty

Children naturally have helpful and caring hearts. Therefore, schools have food drives during the holidays in order for the children to participate in these drives nd learn something from it.

Young children need to be taught to work with their naturally caring heart and critical eye to develop a sense of social justice through explicit teaching.
