In Man's Search for Meaning, Viktor Franlk invokes Nietzsche, who suggests that a person who is able to cultivate some purpose in life can suffer through almost any obstacles to fulfilling that purpose. Frankl develops his understanding of this principle through his experiences in the camps. Faced with the shock of unspeakable horror, Frankl and the other prisoners developed a sense of apathy -- a deadening of the emotions - toward their pain, humiliation and suffering. To fill the void, Frankl turned inward. He cultivated an inner life based on his capacity to feel love and give love and to appreciate the simple goodness he could find in life.
