Starr

Seven is Kenya's only Brother, there connection is that they share the same mother.

Kenya is the Sister of Seven there mom is Sekani.

Seven is Starr's Oldest brother. There connection is that they share the same father.

Seven likes to stay with Starr as when they were at the church for Khalil's funeral "Momma reaches behind me and rubs Seven's back. There are rare times when Seven is not around and Momma thinks Sekani and I can't hear, that she'll tell daddy, "I still can't belive you slept with that nasty ho." Sekani is Seven's mom who regrets the birth of his son.

"Kenya is about the only person I hang out with in Garden Heights. It's easy to hang out with Kenya because of our connection to Seven" (Pg.5-6)

"Starr and I share and older brother Seven. But she and I aren't related. Her dad is Seven's dad and my momma is Seven's momma."(Pg.5)

Starr

I believe that the novel's protagonist, Starr is a sixteen-year-old black teenager who witnesses the shooting of her unarmed friend, Khalil. Her role as a good friend and citizen of her black community is to avenge and bring justice forward for all the black people who died for no absolute reason but instead for their race of being black. Reason being this is her second shooting she has experienced the first was when she was a little kid and a King Lord killed her childhood friend while playing at the park, she is now tried and depressed and wants to make it so people in her community don't have to experience the same thing she has. So far what she has done to address this issue is by having an interview with detectives as she mention when she wakes up after Khalil's death "On Monday, the day I'm supposed to talk to the detectives." (Pg.67) So far from reading the book she is still not successful in her role as when she wen't to talk to the detectives about the issue all they would ask about were unnecessary questions instead of what she witnessed during the shooting and Officer-OneFifften was let off the hook.

A type of conflict which has occurred in this book is person vs person. This type of conflict occurred when Khalil disobeyed the officer's order of staying still and had decided to open the front door during that moment Starr recalls "Pow! One. Khalil's body jerks. Blood splatters from his back. He holds on to the door to keep himself upright. Pow! Two. Khalil gasps. Pow! Three Khalil looks at me stunned. The conflict between the officer and Khalil was resolved as in the end Khalil has a painful death as some guy mentions in the distance "Damn bruh. They killed him!"

Evidence #2: One personality trait that Starr has is that she is scrupulous type of person. What that means is somebody who does things very carefully, properly and correctly. Alongside that someone who is very concerned to do the wrong thing. As when the police over pulled over both Starr and Khalil for no absolute reason Officer- One Fifteen says to Star "Hands on the dashboard!" the officer barks at me "Don't move!"(Pg.22) As a result for doing the right thing she does what he tells her and puts her hands on the dash board as instructed. Because as a child her parents thought her to do the right thing when encountered by cop which is to do whatever they tell you to do, keep your hands visible, don't make any sudden moves and only listen. As she mentions "My parents haven't raised me to fear the police, just to be smart around them and not to move while a cop has his back to you."(Pg.23) In spite of doing the right thing and keeping silent this trait in the end harmed her as she was not able to tell Khalil not to make a sudden move verbally and as a result when Khalil open the front driver's door to ask Starr if she was okay. He got shoot by the police officer three times.

Evidence #1: When Starr was at the party and noticed her childhood friend was approaching her in such a long time she had mentioned that "Brown eyes with long eyelashes appear in front of me. They're like mine."(Pg.26)
