Earthquakes

r

5 things you should know about Earthquakes:1) Earthquakes are when blocks move together2) Earthquakes can be shallow or very deep*shallow are more dangerous 3) The power of an Earthquake is called Megaitude*500,000 deticable quakes a year*100,000 can be felt*100 cause damage4)Earthquakes themselves don't kill that many people, but the neutral and manmade buildings5)Most earthquakes are on plate boardersSide note: Hypocenter- core of an earthquakeEpiccenter- on the surfiest

Tusnamis

Definition

r

A high sea wave cause by an earthquake, submarine landslide, or other disturbances

Geologic History

Eras

Mesozoic Era

r

Formation of Rocky Mountains.Age of Reptiles (Triassic, Jurassic, Cretaceous Periods).

Precambrian Era

r

The very beginning( 4.6 billion years ago to 570,000,000 years ago).Landmass forms, and the first single cell organisms appear.

Paleozic Era

r

Periods when large parts of North America are covered by shallow seas.Age of Amphibians and fish.First insects, plants, and animals appear on land.

Cenozoic Era

r

Ice sheets cover much of N. America.Continents take shapes.Humans are being developed.Modern life forms.

Pangea

Proof

r

Proof 1: Jigsaw FormationProof 2: Fossil EvidenceProof 3: Similar landforms on either side of the Atlantic OceanProof 4: Ice sheets covered parts of Africa, India, and Australia

Hurricanes: Hurricane Dorian 2019

Chacteristics

r

Fast winds and sometimes crushing waves. needs Warm water of Plus 27.Warm air rises in a storm forming an area of low pressure underneath.Formed in the tropics in the late summer and fall. Around the Equator. The waves are dangerous when a hurricane heads towards land. Drbree is also dangerous.

Dorian

r

From August 24th - September 10th 2019.The Bahamas was the main place hit by the hurricane leaving at least 70,000 homeless. The east side of Canada, the USA, Southern Greenland and Iceland.$8.31 billion dollars in damage.

June 19th - July 13 2013 was the time of the flood.Areas along the rivers were the most affected. $1.7 billion dollars in damage .This was all from a ton of rain water.

Climate

Factors affecting climate

Near bodies of water

r

Water warms and cools slower than near by land.In summer, water is cooler than the land and air temperature over the water is also cooler. The cool air cool the near by land.

Relief

r

Relief refers to the elevation on the land. Air rises to get over mountains. The air cools, condenses and falls over condenses and falls back to earth as rain or snow on the wind ward side of the mountains. on the lee ward side it's dry.

Elevation

r

The higher you climb (higher the altitude) the cooler the air temperature becomes.

Wind Direction

r

Air over water collects moisture. Over land, the air rises and cools, and moisture falls back to earth as rain or snow.

Oceans Currents

r

A warm ocean currents brings moisture and warms nearby land.A cool ocean current cannot hold as much moisture and cools nearby land.

Latitude

r

The further north or south from the equator, the cooler it becomes.

Differecne between Cilmate and weather

Weather

r

The day to day readings of temperature and precipitation.

Climate

r

The long term patterns of Temperature and precipitation.

Canada's Land-form Regions

Difference between Region and Landform region

Landform Region

r

Is part of the Earth with a unique set of physical features that people often use to meet their needs.

Region

r

An area with certain characteristics that set it apart from other areas.

Canada's Land-form Regions

Canadian sheild

r

A rugged, rocky, densely forested landscape with many lakes and rivers.Oldest and largest region.

Appalachian Mountains

r

Go from the NE USA to the tip of Newfoundland's Northern arm.Hilly Mountains, trees, and coast to the water.

Western Cordillera

r

B.C., Alberta, Yukon.Young massive mountains formed during the Mesazoic era.

Innuition Mountains

r

Far North, NVT.High lands with young Mountains(covered in ice).Located North of the Arctic circle.

Great Lakes/St. Lawrence Low Lands

r

Southern Ontario & Quebec.Fate, fram lands(great soil), Most populated region.

Interior Plains

r

Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba.Very flat: farm land.

Arctic Low Lands

r

NVT, NW territories, surrounds Huson Bay.Flat, very wet with bogs swaps lakes and rivers, and vey little vegetation.

Tornadoes: Ottawa area 2018

Tornadoes

r

Most Tornadoes form from thunderstorms. You need warm, moist air from the Gulf of Mexico and cool, dry air from Canada. When these two air masses meet, they create instability in the atmosphere. Rising air within the updraft tilts the rotating air from horizontal to vertical.

Ottawa 2018

r

This Tornado was very rough on the area. Cause much damage.

Wild fire: Fort McMary May 1, 2016

About the wild fire

r

The wild fire started May 1st 2016.Over 88,000 people were forced from their homes. About 2,400 homes and buildings wee damage. Causing about $9.9 billion dollars in damage. To this day no one knows how or where the fire started.
