Access to Water in Canada - Mind Map

Access to Water in Canada

Economic Perspective

Bottled Water Companies

Water is a gold mine when it comes to the industry because they can just get the water for nearly free and sell it off for several times more than they got it for.

They don't value water as anything more than free money to trick people into purchasing water that is free to them.

Companies would rather go for the profit over any other aspect of water.

Indigenous Business Development

Water is important to the economy of their reserves and areas because water is used for everything which is tied to their business and tourism that comes in.

They see their current method of retrieving water is not cost-effective as they have to pay a lot more to package and fly in bottled water into the reserve than just get a treatment plant to get clean water.

They believe that building a water treatment plant in their communities is key as the plant will provide both clean access to drinking water and job opportunities for those in the community.

Political Perspective

City of Toronto (municipal)

Clean water is provided from Lake Ontario by the government for all of Toronto to access.

They don't really take responsibility to help other communities access clean drinking water. They only worry about what happens in the city.

The municipal government has provided clean access to drinking water around the Toronto area but has not taken steps or even shown care to communities that don't have this access.

Government of Canada (Federal)

The government is trying to remove boil water advisories as they try to help communities get access to clean drinking water.

They have invested millions of dollars in building plants and treatment centres to try and provide filtration to nearby lakes by the communities.

The government has promised to remove the water yet not much is getting done in time and at the right pace.

Indigenous Government (eg. Band Councils, Assembly of First Nations)

They are trying to convince the government every day to try and take more action in providing access to clean drinking water in their communities.

The Indigenous Government believes that water is a human right that should be both accessible for everyone and protected.

The Indigenous government wants to be acknowledged for what they have to go through without water and the struggles they face.

United Nations (International)

They declared water as a fundamental human right as water should be assessable and clean for everyone to have.

The United Nations have worked with many countries to try and provide access to clean drinking water for countries that do not have that luxury. They have built both wells and treatment plants around the world.

The UN has set goals and plans to try and achieve water accessibility for everyone that is clean, safe and affordable.

What are some solutions?

Building a new water treatment plant(Government funding)

Water can be filtered clean and they can use clean water now. The plant also provides job opportunities to the citizens near by.

They have to have people in the community to run the plant and the plant has to receive funding for maintenance.

Cut back on buying bottled water and charge these companies the money they should be charged.

The water from these companies can be saved and given to communities that need it. Also, less money is wasted on bottled water which will lead to both saved money and less plastic in the environment.

Small businesses are affected as they lose a product a consumer may want. In addition, bottled water companies may fight back against the government for these charges.

Social Perspective

Indigenous Peoples of Canada

The indigenous people of Canada believe in how water is spiritual and connected to the land. The water should be able to be accessed by everyone.

Water is something they treasure a lot more than others as they lack the ability to access and use the water.

Indigenous people believe that the water is a human rights and how like other rights they deserve clean water because they don't have access.

Citizens of Toronto

Water is not treated as sacred as the Indigenous as they can just access it through their taps.

Water is something we waste and take advantage of because we have so much of it that we forget many other people don't have it.

Water is not viewed as crucial as it should be because citizens of Toronto are so lucky to have fresh water.

Environmental Perspective

Advocates for Water Equality

Clean access to water would allow Indigenous reserves and other areas to use the clean water they get instead of using bottled water and destroying the environment with the plastic.

Clean water means they can do all the normal things others can such as drinking, cleaning, showering and cooking which would mean less waste would be put into the environment.

Fewer bottles of water would end up in landfill if more communities like some Indigenous communities had clean access to fresh and clean water. Some of these big advocates are the water brothers and Autumn Peltier.

Ecologists and Water Scientists

Water is connected to everything in the ecosystem and having access to water allows us to continue that ecosystem as we are a big part in it.

They see water access is important to everybody because they study water contamination and a lot of contamination can be found in bottled water. Drinking bottled water is not always healthier and it is better for people to drink from a clean source of water.

Water needs to be available for people to drink instead of bottled water as bottled water companies take lots of groundwater which takes a long time to replenish and is harmful to both us and the environment.
