Loss of faith
In his memoir, Night, Elie Wiesel shows how he slowly loses his faith in god, humanity and the world during the Holocaust.
Loss of faith in god-deny the existence of god
He thinks god could not protect him because he thinks that god lets people be burned in the crematorium. (pg 67)
He questioned the existence of god because praying changes nothing. Even if he prays, he still suffers at the camp because he thinks god does not provide protection and justice. (66)
Possible MODs: (Process description) Elie used to be very loyal to god, but it changed during his experiences at the camp.
In the end, he completely stopped believing god when he talked about how he does not even pray anymore. He accepted his fate and he knows praying will not help. (pg 76)
Loss of faith in humanity-
he is desensitized from
the harsh treatment
He saw people of his own kind betray each other. During
the long march, a person left their father behind. (pg 90)
Elie saw German girls flirting with the guards, and they do
not care about what is happening to the Jews. (pg 46)
Possible MODs: (Cause and effect) Elie witnessed so brutality from the everyone, which makes him think that no one has kindness in them.
The Nazis treated Elie very poorly as they force him to work, and they would beat him if he slacks. The Nazis also provide very little food for them. (pg 54) NEW POINT
Elie talked about the lack of action from the world. He wonders how no one knows about what is happening to him. (page 32)
When Elie was walking through a village, the bystanders
were not surprised at all, and they did not help any of the
prisoners. (pg 46)
Possible MODs: (Cause and effect) Because the villagers did not do anything to help him, he lost faith in the world.
Elie was about to name the book "And the world remained silent" because he talks about how the world for putting him in a lot of trouble and not dealing with the situation. (preface IV)
