FIBRE TO FABRIC - Mind Map

FIBRE TO FABRIC

WOOL

STEP 1(Rearing and breeding): The wool-yielding sheep are given protein-rich food such as mixture of corn, pulses, jowar and oil-cake. The sheep are selectively bred, depending upon the quality of wool required. The parents of the sheep are chosen with the desired charecteristics.

STEP 2: In a process called Shearing, the sheep's body is shaved to obtain fleece with the help of hair cutting machines

STEP 3: (Scouring): The sheared wool is then washed in a number of tanks with soap solution to remove the grease, dust and dirt. This process is called scouring.

STEP 4: The dry hair of different textures are then sorted out by a process called Sorting.

STEP 5: The sorted hair is then dyed with different colors.

STEP 6: Finally, the dyed wool is weaved and spun to obtain woolen clothes.

SILK

SERICULTURE

STEP 1: Eggs of silk moth are stored carefully on strips of cloth and then sold to the farmers.

STEP 2: The eggs are kept by the farmers under hygienic conditions and under controlled temperature and humidity until the caterpillars come out of the shell.

STEP 3: The silk moth caterpillars are kept in bamboo trays and fed on freshly chopped mulberry leaves.

STEP 4: When the caterpillars stop eating, these are shifted to bamboo chambers provided with small racks, twigs. Here, the caterpillars spin cocoons. Inside the cocoons, the pupa keeps growing.

STEP 5: At the end of the pupal stage, the moth cuts the cocoon and flies out.

STEP 6: The cocoons are then sorted according to their color, texture, size and shape.

STEP 7: The sorted cocoons are collected, and then they are put in boiling water to kill the insect inside them.

STEP 8: The cocoons are given a series of hot and cold immersions. This makes the silk gum soft.

STEP 9: The silk filaments are separated from the cocoons. This process is called reeling of silk. The resulting fibre is called raw silk. It can be dyed into various colors.

STEP 10: Silk fibres are then spun to get the silk threads. Silk threads are woven to get silk cloth
