School

Secondary Socialization

Provides a "hidden curriculum" in Norms, Values, and Beliefs

You are exposed to peer groups in school for the first time

Total Institutions

Places where people are totally cut off from the outside world

Term coined by Erving Goffman

ex. Military, boarding schools, psychiatric institutions

residents undergo re socialization, where their environment is carefully controlled to encourage them to develop new sets of norms, values, and beliefs.

Peers

Peer groups- social groups whose members have interests, social position, and usually age in common

Social Prescriptions - Behaviors that were expected of people in peer groups

As you get older, peer groups have a massive impact on the socialization process.

We do not just pick peer groups based off of our traits, as they help mold what traits we end up with.

Mass Media

the media you consume are a large part of your socialization

Mass media is a large part of american life

how we consume our media is affected by race, class, and age

There are connections between excessive tv in early childhood and cognitive, language, and social emotional delays

Definition - the means for delivering impersonal communications to a vast audience

Fairy Tales

Allow children to subconsciously deal with their fears

Socialization lessons in fairy tales are indirect

children identify with the "hero" of the story rather than the good or bad side

Simpler way to show little kids the structure of the world in a way they can understand without all of the complexities.

Prominent themes are love, fear, death, isolation, and abandonment
