Athens males trained physically, but they valued education more.

Women in Athens had very few rights.

Sparta was a military society.

Males in Sparta began training at age 7 and did not retire from the military until age 60.

Spartan women had more rights than other Greek civilizations, they were allowed to own land and run businesses

Greece had a rugged, mountainous terrain.

Greece is an island.

Such terrain caused Greek civilizations to form in isolated clusters and the surrounding waters allowed them to travel by sea.
