Atmosphere
The atmosphere in act 5 is Macbeth castle is hopeless they know they lost they are mourning already. In this quote it is shows how scared Macbeths soilders were "Go, prick thy face and over-red thy fear, thou lily-livered boy. What soldiers, patch? Death of thy soul! Those linen cheeks of thine are counselors to fear. What soldiers, whey-face?"(Act 5. Scene 3. 16-19)
The feeling in Macbeth's castle in act 1 is cheerful because he is promoted to thane of Cowdar. The king and his attendants are dining and sleeping over at Macbeth's castle. King Duncan says, "This castle hath a pleasant seat. The air nimbly and sweetly recommends itself unto our gentle senses."(1.6. 1-3). On the other hand it is tense for Macbeth and his wife because they only have shot at killing king Duncan.
The atmosphere in Macbeth castle in Act 2 is dreadful, fearful, and stressful when the king dies in Macbeth castle. Most people are sad and worried that they could be next for the kings expect Macbeth and his wife. It also sparked a lot of confusion because the king was assassinated in the middle of the night by Macbeth but everyone thought it was the servents who were hired by Malcom and Donalbain.
The atmosphere in Scotland is dreadful and tense because of the ongoing war according to the second witch "When the hurly-burly’s done when the battle’s lost and won."( Act 1. page 1. 3-4).
Subtopic
Weather
When the witches are going to meet up in Act 1 scene 1 the first witch says "When should the three of us meet again? Will it be in thunder, lightning, or rain?"( Act 1. page 1. 1-2) meaning it might be cloudy. When its cloudy it might rain or their might be thunder. She might have said that to see if it was too dangerous to come out. Stormy and dark weather is used to
"Threatens his bloody stage. By th' clock ’tis day,
And yet dark night strangles the travelling lamp." (Act 2. page 1. 7) It is dark and cloudy. The clouds are blocking the sun which makes it dark. When it is dark it signifies mourning or a death in this case it signifies the death of king Duncan.
Place
Macbeth house is where the king and his attendants is staying in Act 1 and 2.
In Act 4 the witches are in a cavern with a burning cauldron.
The setting takes place in 11 century Scotland. In modern day it is part of the United kingdom. Scotland was a violent place in the 11th century. People would kill one another and would be praised from time to time.
time
When king Duncan is assassinated it is around 12 o'clock. It is known through this dialogue "Fleance: the moon is down. I have not heard the clock.
Banquo: and she goes down at twelve." (Act 2. Scene 1. 2-3).
Person vs Society
When Macbeth is king he is not the most popular. In the beginning he was loved but later he was viewed as an evil tyrant. In this quote by Macduff "Bleed, bleed, poor country!
Great tyranny, lay thou thy basis sure, for goodness dare not check thee. Wear thou thy wrongs; the title is affeered.—Fare thee well, lord. I would not be the villain that thou think’st For the whole space that’s in the tyrant’s grasp, And the rich East to boot."(Act 4. Scene 3. 32-37) Later in the play everyone goes up againt Macbeth all the lords and soilders.
Person vs Self
Macbeth is going crazy as shown in act 2,3,4,5. Macbeth starts having hallucinations and gets paranoid all of that is going on in his head. "Hecate is responsible for it according to this quote Shall raise such artificial sprites as by the strength of their illusion shall draw him on to his confusion."(Act 3. Scene 5. 27-29). Macbeth is battling his mental health.
Lady Macbeth is dealing with a mental illness or a sleep disorder her self in act 5. She sleepwalks and talks to herself this backed by the gentlewomen "Since his majesty went into the field, I have seen her rise from her bed, throw her nightgown upon her, unlock her closet, take forth paper, fold it, write upon ’t, read it, afterwards seal it, and again return to bed; yet all this while in a most fast sleep." (Act 5. Scene. 3-7). She is most likely dealing with REM Sleep Behaviour Disorder people usually act out thir dreams. Lady Macbeth is trying to overcome her sleep disorder but is most likely killed by it.
Person vs Supernatural
The witches are not Macbeth friends. They give him a prophecy that are true but they corrupt him. The witches have a bad influence on Macbeth. Hecate later will give him fake illusions to trick Macbeth. "And, which is worse, all you have done hath has been but for a wayward son, spiteful and wrathful, who, as others do, loves for his own ends, not for you. But make amends now. Get you gone, and at the pit of Acheron meet me I' th' morning. Thither he will come to know his destiny. Your vessels and your spells provide, your charms and everything beside. I am for the air. This night I’ll spend Unto a dismal and a fatal end. Great business must be wrought ere noon. Upon the corner of the moon there hangs a vap'rous drop profoundly. I’ll catch it ere it come to ground. Snd that distilled by magic sleights shall raise such artificial sprites by the strength of their illusion shall draw him on to his confusion."(Act 3. Scene 5. 10-29)
Person vs Person
Macbeth and Macduff fought one another. Macbeth sent soldiers to kill Macduffs family. Macduff on the other hand got help from the king of England to help him overthrow Macbeth. In the end they both fight using swords and Macduff wins this time beheading Macbeth. Macbeth thought he was invincible because no one could attack him if the were born from a women but Macduff was c -sectioned.
Person vs Nature
The English army used branches to create the illusion of a moving forest and so Macbeth spies would give him inaccurate reports. They used nature for camouflage in battle meaning Macbeth has to overcome nature. In the prophecy it says when Birnam forest moves to Dunsaine Macbeth is done for. The soilders moved the forest by taking branches with them. In the end it worked according to this messenger "As I did stand my watch upon the hill, I looked toward Birnam and anon methought the wood began to move." (Act 5. Scene 5. 33-34).
Corruption is the demise of people
Corruption is a theme that affects the main character and his wife, Macbeth and lady Macbeth. Macbeth in the begining is a likable nobleman who serves the king that ends up being an evil tyrant. His wife's greed manipulates him to kill the king and take the crown. Corruption makes him regret his action because it later causes Macbeth to make irrational choices. It blinds Macbeth with anger and fear. Macbeth is used to his lavish life and does not want to lose it so he kills his best friend and Macduffs whole family. Corruption is the doom of people like Macbeth, he has his kingdom go up against him and lady Macbeth deals with mental health issues that end up killing her. Corruption is a reocuring theme and is shown everywhere in Macbeth.
Violence causes more violence/ Your Actions have consequences.
Violence causes more violence is a big them in Macbeth because there is a lot violence in the play. The violence in reality and in Macbeth is like the dominoes effect because violence will lead to more violence just like dominoes. This is shown in Macbeth. Macbeth in act 2 first murders King Duncan then he believes Banquo is catching onto him so he murders Banquo. Macbeth starts to prepare for war when Macduff gets help from the king of England. Macbeth then murders Macduffs family. The king of England and banished Sottish noblemen lead their army of 10,000 men to Scotland to overthrow Macbeth. Lady Macbeth dies without a cause becaue of her guilt which caused her to have a sleeping disorder and that is the plausible explanation of her sudden death. Macbeth Is killed in a duel against Macduff in the end. If Macbeth had not killed King Duncan in the beginning then would not have happened because violence causes more violence. Macbeth knew his actons had consequences but he still killed King Duncan because of his greed.
Macbeth
In act 1 Macbeth is a strong man who serves the king and is a war hero. He got promoted to thane of Cawdor and is already the noble thane of Glamis. When told the prohecy Macbeth does not belive it until he becoes the thane Cowdor which the prphecy predicted. Macbeth tells his wife about the prophecy when he coems home she tells him kill king Duncan but Macbeth hesitates to kill Duncan he knows there are consequences for his actions he can not think about killing the king. He is a smart man who understands the importance of not harming people.
In act 2 Macbeth kills King Duncan in the middle of the night and blames the servants. He has his first hallucination before he kills the king. He sees an imaginary dagger in his mind in this quote "Is this a dagger which I see before me, The handle toward my hand? Come, let me clutch thee. I have thee not, and yet I see thee still. Art thou not, fatal vision, sensible To feeling as to sight? Or art thou but a dagger of the mind, a false creation, proceeding from the heat-oppressèd brain? I see thee yet, in form as palpable As this which now I draw. Thou marshall’st me the way that I was going, and such an instrument I was to use. Mine eyes are made the fools o' th' other senses,
Or else worth all the rest. I see thee still". (Act 2. Scene 1. 32-44). Macbeth kills king Duncan but regrets it by saying "Wake Duncan with thy knocking. I would thou couldst". (Act 2. Scene 2. 75). Macbeth in the end was manipulated by his wife.
Macbeth in act 3 becomes a worse person. You see a dramatic changes in Macbeth he went form a nobleman to a tyrant. He hires two murders to kill Banquo and his son Fleance. Macbeth lies to them about Banquo in this quote "Well then, now have you considered of my speeches? Know that it was he, in the times past, which held you So under fortune, which you thought had been" (Act 3. Scene 1. 78-80). The murderers leave at dusk and kill Banquo but miss the opportunity to kill Fleance which further implements the idea that he will come back and kill Macbeth. When Macbeth is told about Banquo's murder he is happy. Macbeth starts to go crazy in his party. He sees Banquo ghost. Macbeth is later preparing for a wat proven by this quote "All which we pine for now. And this report hath so exasperated the king that he prepares for some attempt of war."(Act 3. Scene 6. 37-39)
In Act 4 Macbeth receives a prophecy from an apparition. He does not change but gains confidence because the prophecy states that only someone who is not born from a woman can harm. Everyone is born from a woman. Macbeth is told to be violent and have nothing to worry about in this quote "Be bloody, bold, and resolute. Laugh to scorn the power of man, for none of woman born shall harm Macbeth." (Act 4. Scene 1. 81-83). Macbeth also sends his soldiers to kill Macduff's family.
Macbeth in Act 5 is a doomed man who believes he is invincible because of the prophecy told to him by the witches. The prophecy states Macbeth can only be killed if the Birnam forest is moved and only someone who is not born from a woman can kill him. Macbeth is a horrible person in the final act he is willing to do anything to fight back and protect his throne even though what he is about to get is fair. He does not admit defeat he is in denial. Macbeth himself goes out to fight because he believes he is invincible. His bravery is respected despite the fact Macbeth is doomed. "I’ll fight till from my bones my flesh be hacked. Give me my armour." (Act 5. Scene 3. 33-34). Macduff beheads Macbeth during the fight in the end of act 5.
Lady Macbeth
In act 1 Lady Macbeth is a power-hungry women who wants her husband to be king even that means killing the current king who is a great man. Lady Macbeth is greedy. Macbeth is already the Thane of two cities but she wants more and manipulates her husband to kill the king and become king. She is willing to do anything shown in this quote "Under my battlements. Come, you spirits that tend on mortal thoughts, unsex me here, and fill me from the crown to the toe top-full of direst cruelty. Make thick my blood. Stop up the access and passage to remorse,"( Act. Scene 5. 30-34).
Lady Macbeth in act 2 becomes worse this time managing to convince her husband to murder King Duncan. She shows off her manipulative skills that she uses on Macbeth. She is extremely ambitious even though she states king Ducan reminded her of her father she made Macbeth kill him. Macbeth calls her husband a coward for not being able to kill the king despite the fact she can not do it herself. "Infirm of purpose! Give me the daggers. The sleeping and the dead are but as pictures. 'Tis the eye of childhood That fears a painted devil. If he do bleed, I’ll gild the faces of the grooms withal, for it must seem their guilt."(2. 2. 53-57).
Lady Macbeth in Act 3 becomes the queen as her husband is the king. Lady Macbeth feels bad for her husband who is being ruined by guilt and she is responsible for it. She is beginning to realize manipulating her husband to kill Duncan was a mistake. She shows her guilt in this quote "Naught’s had, all’s spent, Where our desire is got without content. 'Tis safer to be that which we destroy than by destruction dwell in doubtful joy."(3.3.6-9).
Lady Macbeth in Act 5 is dealing with sleep issues. Lady Macbeth regrets everything she has done. She is done in the beginning. The fact she murders some is ruining her. You can sympathize with lady Macbeth she truly regrets everything she has done. Lady Macbeth's only way to relieve herself is sleepwalking she can not talk to no one about it because she will be arrested. The doctor and gentlewomen are the only witnesses of lady Macbeth's sleepwalking. When she sleepwalks she does things people should not be able to do like wash her hands. In her sleepwalking, she is washing the blood off her hands as shown in this quote "Out, damned spot! Out, I say!—One, two. Why, then, ’tis time to do ’t. Hell is murky!—Fie, my lord, fie! A soldier, and afeard? What need we fear who knows it, when none can call our power to account?—Yet who would have thought the old man to have had so much blood in him." (Act 5. Scene 1. 25-28). Lady Macbeth in act 5 dies by jumping off the castle tower. She either commits suicide or it was an accident.
Banquo
In act 1 Banquo is a wise man who understands the prophecy might be false and tries to convince Macbeth that they are trying to play him as shown in this quote "That, trusted home Might yet enkindle you unto the crown
Besides the thane of Cawdor but ’tis strange and oftentimes to win us to our harm the instruments of darkness tell us truths win us with honest trifles, to betray’s In deepest consequence" (Act 1. Scene 3. 125) Banquo is trying to say the witches are telling little things we want to here and will betray them with one big lie. In the end he is right.
Banquo in Act 3 is wise and knows that there something off about Macbeth he knows he cheated his way to the throne as shown in this quote "thou hast it now: king, Cawdor, Glamis, all, As the weird women promised, and I fear Thou played’ st most foully for ’t. Yet it was said It should not stand in thy posterity"(Act 3. Scene 1. 1-4). Later in act 3, he is murdered by three Bandits Banquo received 20 gashes on his head. He later makes an apperance as a ghost in Macbeths head.
Fleance
Fleance is Banquo's son. He survives the assassination in Act 3 when the bandits murder his father. He will most likely take the crown from Macbeth because the prophecy said Banquo's offspring will be the next king.
Macduff
Macduff in act 3 is thane of Fife noble man who wants things to go back to normal. In this quote from the lord, it showes his intentions "From whom this tyrant holds the due of birth—Lives in the English court and is received Of the most pious Edward with such grace That the malevolence of fortune nothing Takes from his high respect. Thither Macduff Is gone to pray the holy king upon his aid To wake Northumberland and warlike Siward, That by the help of these—with Him above To ratify the work—we may again Give to our tables meat, sleep to our nights, Free from our feasts and banquets bloody knives, Do faithful homage and receive free honors. All which we pine for now. And this report Hath so exasperated the king that he Prepares for some attempt of war."(Act 3. Scene 6. 25-39). He travelled to northumberland where he asked the king to help get rid of the horrible tryrant known as Macbeth. He is also cautious for not soming back to Scotland becasue he will be killed by Macbeth.
Macduff in Act 4 is controversial. He is a great man who retaliates against Macbeth rule and wants the best for Scotland but on the hand he left his family in a vulnerable position. "Let us rather hold fast the mortal sword and, like good men, bestride our downfall'n birthdom each new morn new widows howl, new orphans cry, new sorrows strike heaven on the face, that it resounds as if it felt with Scotland and yelled out like syllable of dolour."(Act 4. Scene 1. 3-8). This quote shows off his strength, Macduff is not willing to bring in feeling when he has to save a nation. He is willing to fight for Scotland even though he has problems to solve.
Macduff in Act 5 fights and kills Macbeth when overthrow Macbeth. Macduff is a brave man who wants Macbeth the evil tyrant gone. Macduff lost his family due to Macbeth. This quote summarizes what I say about him "Tyrant, show thy face! If thou beest slain, and with no stroke of mine, my wife and children’s ghosts will haunt me still. I cannot strike at wretched kerns, whose arms are hired to bear their staves" (Act 5. Scene 7. 15-20).
Lady Macduff
Lady Macduff was introduced in Act 4. She is Macduffs husband and has a son. She is related to Ross who is her cousin. Lady Macduff loves her husband dearly but the fact that he abandoned her makes her dislike even though she loves him from the bottom of her heart. "Wisdom! To leave his wife, to leave his babes, his mansion and his titles in a place From whence himself does fly? He loves us not; "(Act 4. Scene 2. 6-8). Lady Macduff is used to show both of Macduff sides. Macduff is a nobleman but with abandoning his family he is seen as a bad man. Later in Act 4 she is murdered.
Lennox
We get a deeper look at Lennox in act 3 we see him in act 1 and 2 but. He is against Macbeth he knows that Macbeth killed Duncan and Banquo. He is planning on going up against Macbeth. In this quote he sarcastically says how bad must Macbeth feel for Duncan getting murdered "It was for Malcolm and for Donalbain To kill their gracious father? Damnèd fact!
How it did grieve Macbeth! " (Act 3. scene 6. 6-11).
Lennox is seen in act 4 talking to Macbeth he is against him but lacks the courage to attack him by himself. He addresses Macbeth as good lord but resents him on the inside.
Lennox in Act 5 goes against Macbeth. He is with Menteith and Caithness they are going to Malcolm and his 10,000 soldiers. Lennox is a good man and is against Macbeth. He says "Or so much as it needs, To dew the sovereign flower and drown the weeds. Make we our march towards Birnam."(Act 5. Scene 2. 29-20). Lennox is willing to do anything to get rid of Macbeth.
King Duncan
King Duncan in act 1 is great man who is not corrupt and is the man of the people. He promotes Macbeth for his bravery. King Duncan has three kids Lennox, Malcom, and Donalbain
King Duncan is assassinated in Act 2.
Malcolm
Both Malcolm and Donalbain are sons of the king. They are cowards for running away instead of taking the crown in act 2. Once their father died the could have taken the throne. They are idiots for not explaining that they did not murder the king. They could clear their names easily but they ran way.
Malcolm is alive and well in England king Edward is taking care of him despite his misfortunes. It is proven by this quote from the lord "From whom this tyrant holds the due of birth—Lives in the English court and is received Of the most pious Edward with such grace That the malevolence of fortune nothing Takes from his high respect."(Act 3. Scene 6. 25-29)
Malcolm in Act 4 is a humble man who knows his imperfection that makes him hesitant to take the crown. As shown in this quote "It is myself I mean, in whom I know all the particulars of vice so grafted That, when they shall be opened, black Macbeth will seem as pure as snow,"(3.3.51-54). He knows he is not the best person in the world which will make him the best king. Macduff later in the act manages to convince him to become king and Malcolm accepts the responsibility.
Malcolm in Act 5 is leading the English army with his uncle Siward. He is not with Macbeth he is here to take back his crown. Macduff beheads Macbeth and Malcolm becomes king it is proven when all the knights say "Hail, King of Scotland!" (Act 5. Scene 4. 60) to Malcolm.
Donalbain
Porter
The Porter was drunk and was used for comic relief. He introduced in Act 2 his job is to open the gate for people who want to come in. We can not say anything about him as a person because he was drunk."'Faith sir, we were carousing till the second cock. And drink, sir, is a great provoker of three things."(Act 2. Scene 3. 10).
Witches
The witches are mischievous in Act 1. They are telling Macbeth and Banquo a prophecy that might ruin them. "Fair is foul, and foul is fair. Let’s fly away through the fog and filthy air."(Act 1. scene 1. 12-13). They have a toxic mindset. The witches believe that good things will go bad but bad things become good. The witches are also complete sociopaths in this quote from the first witch shows something so little that makes them bring absolute agony upon people. They seemingly have no feelings in this quote "A sailor’s wife had chestnuts in her lap, And munched, and munched, and munched. “Give me,” quoth I.
“Aroint thee, witch!” the rump-fed runnion cries her husband’s to Aleppo gone, master o' the' Tiger; but in a sieve, I’ll thither sail, And like a rat without a tail, I’ll do, I’ll do, and I’ll do. ....I myself have all the other, and the very ports they blow, all the quarters that they know I' th' shipman’s card. I’ll drain him dry as hay sleep shall neither night nor day hangs upon his penthouse lid he shall live a man forbid weary sev'nnights nine times nine shall he dwindle, peak and pine."(Act 1. Scene 3. 4-10, 14-24).
Hecate
Hecate is introduced in act 3 as the leader of the three witches she got mad at them for not consulting with her as shown in this quote "Have I not reason, beldams as you are? saucy and overbold, how did you dare to trade and traffic with Macbeth in riddles and affairs of death, and I, the mistress of your charms, the close contriver of all harms, was never called to bear my part, or show the glory of our art?"(Act 3. Scene 5. 2-9). She promises to bring hell upon Macbeth.
