Narrative Writing

Step 5: Review (Analysis) & Discussion

Teacher and students will work together to identify strengths and weaknesses, what should be kept or what should be removed along with the reasons why, in an attempt to make their writing better. Teacher and students will also explore what role each element plays and why each element is crucial

Step 6: Clarify

Teacher will ask random question on what was taught to see what students understand or may need further clarification with. If there are are weak areas the teacher will revisit the area with students and explain using new examples where applicable

Step 7: Provision of Topics

A list of acceptable topics is provided by the teacher

Each student will select a topic then that interests him/her and begin plotting (mapping) out his/her story.

Step 8: Writing

Students will complete and submit their stories for evaluation

Teacher will carry out evaluation and subsequently provide feedback.

Step 4: Practice Writing

Whole Class (Developmental) Activity

Teacher and students will agree on a topic and students will take turns adding a sentence each to develop the complete story. Each sentence added must observe or demonstrate active use of one of the elements. Students should also be able to identify the elements s/he is using.

Teacher and students work together to construct a short story. This can either be done orally or in writing.

Step 3: Discussion

Teacher will engage students in whole class discussions. They will discuss the elements present in the samples. Teacher will ask students to share personal observations of these elements as well as ask them to identify where else they have seen these element, e.g. books, movies, music, etc. To cement the connections between students' exposure and the lesson the teacher will explain to students that the movies are an example of Narrative Writing; they begin in written form then they are transformed through acting; but they are not presented to the audience in writing unlike books.

Step 2: Teaching Aids

Teacher distributes various samples of narrative writing e.g. newspaper article, book, magazines, speech, poems, song lyrics, etc.

Together, the Teacher and students will thoroughly examine the structure and content of the samples.

Step 1: INTRODUCTION

Step 1: Introduction: Teacher introduces the topic to the class, then outlines his/her aim along with desired student objectives/goals. Then the Teacher provides notes about what Narrative Writing entails.

Students listen and make the necessary notes.
